Hasbro-owned mobile game company Backflip Studios has added former Electronic Arts creative director Rex Dickson (pictured) and former Warner Bros. director of product management Zach Pond to its team in Boulder, Colorado.
Dickson will be serving as design manager, using his background in the gaming industry in the position. Previously he served as creative director at Electronic Arts Tiburon for the EA Sports Madden NFL series. He has also worked on NCAA 14, Medal of Honor, Turok and Homefront for EA, Acclaim and THQ.
Pond, meanwhile, has been appointed director of digital marketing. In his new role he will draw on his skills from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, where he served as director of product management and worked on a number of LEGO games titles. Prior to that, Pond worked at Disney Online Studios and EA Mobile on marketing for Club Penguin, Pirates of the Caribbean, Monopoly, Tetris and Scrabble.
Backflip develops and publishes mobile games that have been downloaded more than 400 million times and are played by more than 10 million active monthly users, including DragonVale, Paper Toss and Transformers: Earth Wars. (Hasbro picked up a 70% stake in the mobile publisher for US$112 million in cash in 2013.) The division continues to drive growth for the company—in Q2 2017 the toyco’s Entertainment and Licensing category saw revenues fall by 1% to US$51.5 million, but declines were offset by growth in digital gaming led by the mobile gaming studio.
