Corus Entertainment-owned Nelvana Enterprises has secured a partnership with FremantleMedia Kids & Family (FMK), which will exclusively represent Nelvana’s popular brands Mysticons, The ZhuZhus, Ranger Rob and Max & Ruby in the UK.
Nelvana Enterprises is the global licensing and merchandising arm of the Toronto-based children’s media producer/distributor, Nelvana.
The representation comes a week after Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group secured a deal that will see its Imprint division launch a series of novels based on Nelvana’s Mysticons. Other licensees already signed on for the brand include Playmates Toys, Dark Horse Comics and Topps Company. The fantasy series, which recently debuted in North America and is the number-one fall program on Corus’ YTV network, follows the adventures of four girl superheroes brought together by a prophecy to fight evil and save the world. (Mysticons bowed in the US on Nickelodeon in August.)
Ranger Rob, meanwhile, made its US debut on NBCUniversal-owned preschool net Sprout (now a preschool block on Universal Kids) in July after premiering on Corus-owned Treehouse in Canada last fall. Like Mysticons, the IP is also expanding into consumer products as a toy line from Quebec-based master toy licensee Imports Dragon is being prepped to coincide with the show’s recently greenlit 14-episode second season. The line is expected to launch in Canada and select European territories in spring 2018, followed by a wider release in fall 2018.
For The ZhuZhus, which is based on Cepia’s ZhuZhu Pets robotic hamster toy line, the series bowed on Disney Channel US in September 2016 and has since launched on numerous Disney channels around the world, as well as Discovery Kids for Latin America and the Caribbean in May 2017.
Nelvana Enterprises launched a brand-new ZhuZhu toy line in fall 2015 at US retailers.
The FMK deal comes after Nelvana Enterprises strengthened its senior management team in February by adding licensing and entertainment industry vets Peter Crighton, Kelly Elwood and Tonya Lindo.
