Cartoon Network Studios is revisiting its popular Steven Universe franchise with a new series called Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars, which it’s developing for Prime Video.
The IP’s creator Rebecca Sugar is executive producing the new series alongside Ian Jones-Quartey. Lars of the Stars is set to expand the world of the original Steven Universe series by following the space outlaw Lars Barriga and his pirate crew as they evade the law and travel through space.
WBD and Cartoon Network Studios made the announcement at Annecy today. WBD isn’t sharing any other details on the new series yet.
Steven Universe (pictured) originally ran for five seasons from 2013 to 2019 on Cartoon Network, before expanding into a limited series (Steven Universe Future) and a feature-length film called Steven Universe: The Movie (2019).
Focusing on a kid who protects his town with the help of magical aliens, the franchise has also built up a strong consumer products program. Partners such as Funko, Just Toys International, PhatMojo and Hot Topic teamed up with the initial series during its run.
In 2019, the demand for Steven Universe was 8.1 times higher than the average kids show, according to Parrot Analytics, which estimates the global demand of TV series.
In other WBD news, the company is also renewing Teen Titans Go!—already the longest-running animated series in the DC franchise—for a 10th season on Cartoon Network. The series focuses on five young superheroes and their comedic adventures.
