Another edition of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival drew to a close on Saturday with its annual prize ceremony—and a number of kid-friendly films are among this year’s winners.

First and foremost, director Ugo Bienvenu’s 2D-animated French film Arco (82 minutes, pictured) won the prestigious Cristal Award for a feature film. In recent years, this top prize has been presented to Oscar contender Memoir of a Snail (2024) and Chicken for Linda! (2023).

Arco, which counts actor Natalie Portman among its producers, has been generating some serious award circuit buzz this year after screening at last month’s Cannes Film Festival and getting picked up by Neon (Robot Dreams) for North American distribution shortly thereafter. Exploring the idea that rainbows are actually time-travelers, the film revolves around a 10-year-old boy from the future who tries to return home with the help of a young girl from the past. Arco is produced by Fit Via Vi Film, Remembers and Portman’s MountainA banner.

In another notable Annecy prize win, this year’s Jury Award—which was given to Oscar-bound indie darling Flow last year—went to older-skewing anime feature ChaO (90 minutes) from STUDIO4°C and director Yasuhiro Aoki.

Meanwhile, Belgian/French feature Dandelion’s Odyssey (75 minutes) from Miyu Productions, Ecce Films and UMedia picked up the Paul Grimault Award. Helmed by Momoko Seto, this family-friendly concept is about four dandelions looking for a new home to take root in after surviving a nuclear explosion.

And rounding out the kid-friendly accolades were Audience Award winner Little Amélie or The Character of Rain (77 minutes) from France’s Ikki Films, Puffin Pictures and Maybe Movies. And Olivia and the Invisible Earthquake, a 70-minute co-pro from Cornelius Films (Spain) and France’s Vivement Lundi! and Pyramide Films, earned the Gan Foundation Award for Distribution.
