Netflix and Disney have paired up on a multi-year deal that will bring four original serialized Marvel live-action shows, plus a mini-series event, to the internet TV platform.
The live-action adventure series will bow in 2015 and will be based on four popular Marvel characters, Daredevil, followed by Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage. The epic tale will unfold over several years of original programming. Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, 13-episode series that will culminate in a Marvel’s The Defenders mini-series event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing heroic characters.
The series will be produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Television Studios, and the deal represents Marvel’s most ambitious foray into live-action TV storytelling.
Netflix has cut its chops on original programming with hit series Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, and the service already has content deal in place with DreamWorks for an original Turbo series.
And this new original TV deal follows last year’s movie distribution deal between Netflix and Disney that will see Netflix be the exclusive US subscription television service starting in 2016 for first-run, live-action and animated movies from the Walt Disney Studios, including titles from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Disneynature and Lucasfilm.
