Get out those funky glasses; it looks like 3-D may be coming to a city near you.

L.A.-based Real D, the world’s largest 3-D platform, has received a US$50-million shot in the arm from Shamrock Capital Growth Fund. The investment will support Real D’s efforts to add 300 more screens to its 700-screen footprint by year’s end.

Real D is riding the wave of a recent announcement that DreamWorks will release all its animated flicks in 3-D starting in 2009, and the studio has already begun production on its first original 3-D movie Monsters vs. Aliens.

20th Century Fox is also on board to release a 3-D version of James Cameron’s 2009 project Avatar (which isn’t based on the Nickelodeon series, by the way). But Disney will get out of the gate on March 30 with the debut of its digital animated feature Meet the Robinsons in 3-D.
