DreamWorks Animation has appointed El Segundo, California-based Playmates Toys as the master toy partner for its upcoming Netflix original animated series Voltron: Legendary Defender.

The deal will see Playmates launch an extensive toy line for spring 2017 in support of the new series which re-imagines the classic action/adventure IP from the ’80s.

Set to stream on Netflix this year, Voltron: Legendary Defender follows the exploits of five ordinary teenagers from Earth who become intergalactic war heroes after being transported to space to pilot five robot lions that combine to form the unstoppable Voltron.

The new series was announced by DreamWorks last month as part of the company’s expanded global content agreement with Netflix.

Voltron originally began as a television series from brand owner World Events Productions based on the Japanese anime property Beast King Go Lion and first aired on US television in 1984. An updated version, Voltron Force, debuted on NickToons in June 2011.
