• Last week we told you about Toys ‘R’ Us‘s toy trends rundown, now the retailer has officially kicked off the holiday season with the publication of its annual Big Toy Book. The 14th edition of the catalogue arrives in newspapers and mailboxes across North America this weekend and is loaded with ‘must have’ gifts, coupons and promotions, including a US$50 Jumbo Elmo plush retailing for just US$7.99.
• PBS Kids Between the Lions, the multimedia initiative created to help children ages three to seven acquire literacy skills, has received an additional US$3.5 million in grants from the Barksdale Reading Institute. Producers WGBH, Sirius Thinking and Mississippi Public Broadcasting are putting the cash towards creating 20 more eps of the series.
• David Lane, director of boy-targeted series Orsum Island from Pineapple Squared Entertainment, has been elected to the Hall of Fame at this year’s Cult TV awards in the UK. Lauded for his work on Thunderbirds, Muppet Treasure Island, and Supergirl, Lane is planning to roll out 13 eps of Orsum Island in summer 2008.
