Wildbrain is bringing flagship brand Kidrobot to the big screen after signing a development deal with Paramount Pictures’ Nickelodeon Movies arm.

The first feature film in a planned series will be based on retailer Kidrobot’s limited-edition urban vinyl toys and will be produced by former Paramount exec Scott Aversano.

‘Paramount understood what the property is about, what can be done with it, so we are very excited,’ says Bob Higgins, head of creative for Wildbrain. ‘It has had huge success with other property-based films and having the Nick brand behind it certainly can’t hurt.’

Higgins says that the initial phase of the deal calls for one mixed live-action/animated full-length feature with the possibility for a series, depending on the reception of the first film.

‘We wanted to make the first thing we did with Kidrobot to be significant,’ says Higgins.

It is still early days, and planning for the film is in its nascent stage with producers looking to frame a general story arcs and source script treatments to showcase the world of the toys created by Kidrobot founder and president Paul Budnitz. Production is not expected to begin for at least a year.

Budnitz, Higgins and Wildbrain president and CEO Charles Rivkin will also serve as executive producers on the project.

In addition to developing projects based on Kidrobot, Wildbrain produces the seriesYo Gabba Gabba!, now entering its second season on Nick Jr.
