Following the successful migration of its children’s programming from ABC1 to dedicated digital channels ABC4Kids and ABC3 in February, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation is set to shift its kids educational lineup from ABC1 to a new two-hour block, ABC TV Education, on ABC3 from July 21, 2014.

The new block will air weekdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. during school terms enabling ABC TV to double its educational output with a broader selection of learning content and curriculum for both primary and secondary aged school children.

Primary-age content was previously limited to 30 minutes on ABC1.

New content for secondary aged kids on ABC TV Education will delve into non-curriculum subject areas, such as business, critical thinking and ethics and Indigenous content.

In addition, the extended block will allow for more long-form content focusing on core curriculum subjects like history and science, and drama and arts content will also benefit.

To aid teachers, ABC TV Education will air shows with supporting materials including streaming rights, study guides and expanded web content.

Behind The News (BTN) for teachers and younger audiences will stay on as ABC TV’s flagship educational program airing three times a week.

The moving of ABC TV’s children’s and educational programming frees up ABC1 for more adult-skewing content.
