DreamWorks Animation is tapping into its How to Train Your Dragon franchise and Nokia’s Here Maps to launch Dragons Adventure, a GPS-powered augmented reality app for Nokia’s first tablet, the Lumia 2520.

Dragons Adventure, which also has a companion app for Windows 8 phones, uses Nokia’s Here Maps and LiveSight Augmented reality (AR) to essentially transform a car ride into a personalized gaming terrain that mirrors the real world. Using the app, the tablet can be held up against a car window to seek and find items in the air. Actual landmarks along a drive, such as buildings, lakes and real-life traffic, are then featured within the app’s fictional Isle of Berk from the Dragon universe. Parents can also add voice commands, create missions and add new challenges. Although maximized when driving, it can also be played at home.

Dragons Adventure, based on DreamWorks Animation’s 3D animated film How to Train Your Dragon, is expected to launch later this year when the Lumia 2520 10-inch tablet, which was officially announced today at a price of US$499, makes its debut.

The title is also anticipated to usher in more collaborative titles from DreamWorks and Nokia built specifically for the Lumia 2520 device.
