While KPop Demon Hunters continues a historic run on Netflix (and the music charts), it looks like the film is about to expand beyond streaming.
There has been no official announcement as of press time, but US movie ticketing platform Fandango has quietly started listing sing-along shows at select theaters on August 23 and August 24. Kidscreen has reached out to Netflix for comment.
This will technically be the second theatrical release for the film, after a limited engagement across three theaters in LA, NYC and San Francisco during the week of June 20 to June 26—before the film became a viral sensation.
The hit film follows three female KPop superstars who juggle their lives in the spotlight with their secret identities as demon hunters—a mission that gets complicated when a group of demons disguise themselves as a rival boy band.
Since its June 20 debut, Sony Pictures Animation’s musical has dominated the summer as a streaming phenomenon. With more than 158 million views, KPop Demon Hunters now ranks as the fourth most-watched English-language Netflix movie of all time. It also holds the unique title of the first Netflix film to reach a new viewing peak in its fifth week of release.
The movie is certainly primed for strong ticket sales. Sing-along screenings make sense for KPop Demon Hunters, which features tracks that have spent the last few weeks topping the real-world music charts, including the hit title “Golden”. Last year’s musical family feature Wicked followed a similar strategy, with Universal hosting a limited number of sing-along showings around a month after the film’s initial rollout.
Following the breakout success of KPop Demon Hunters, Netflix has been tight-lipped on how it plans to expand the franchise. But a recent report from The Wrap suggested that the streamer has been considering two sequels, a streaming series and a stage musical, among other follow-up projects.
