Disney+ is increasing its stake in the anime marketplace by ordering a new adaptation of the Mouse House’s Japanese mobile game Disney Twisted-Wonderland.

The first season of Disney Twisted-Wonderland: The Animation, titled “Episode of Heartslabyul,” will roll out on the streamer in October and will consist of eight 22-minute episodes. The anime follows the core story of the ongoing mobile game, which sees a high schooler named Yuuken Enma transported to the Disney villain-themed school for aspiring mages, Night Raven College. Together with his two friends, Ace and Deuce, Enma will clash with the school’s dorm leader Riddle Rosehearts on his quest to return home.

Tokyo-based anime studio Yumeta Company is producing the series, with Takahiro Natori (My Hero Academia, Mobile Suit Gundam 00) serving as the director. On top of this first-season order, Disney has confirmed two more seasons are heading to its streamer at a later date, called “Episode of Savanaclaw” and “Episode of Octavinelle”.

The Twisted-Wonderland game launched in Japan in 2020 and was co-developed by Disney, Aniplex and f4samurai. The game has amassed more than 4.8 million downloads in Japan alone and is still receiving updates with additional story content and new characters to keep the playerbase engaged. Meanwhile, an international edition of the game was released in 2022 for English-speaking players.

As the anime genre continues to explode in popularity, Disney Twisted-Wonderland: The Animation is Disney+’s latest play to bolster its portfolio, which the streamer began building two years ago with its first 2D-animated anime exclusive Summer Time Rendering. Following this initial release, Disney+ has added several anime titles to its catalogue, including Sand Land: The Series, Go! Go! Loser Ranger, Spy x Family, My Hero Academia and Star Wars: Visions
