Corus Entertainment will shut down five children’s channels in Canada on September 1 as part of ongoing efforts to reduce its operating costs.
The media company plans to pull the plug on Nickelodeon, ABC Spark, Disney XD, Disney Jr. and French-language channel La Chaîne Disney. But it has confirmed that Disney Channel will stay up and running on linear and streaming.
The five sunsetting channels have been home to some of the most popular kids shows in Canada over the years, including Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants (pictured) on Nick, and Spidey and His Amazing Friends and SuperKitties on Disney Jr.
Corus has been aggressively cutting costs lately against the backdrop of a continued revenue slump, which was exacerbated last year by the loss of rights to WBD brands HGTV, Food Network and the Cooking Channel.
In Q2 2025, the company sustained an overall loss of US$39 million (CAD$55.9 million), and its quarterly revenue was down from US$215.7 million (CAD$299.5 million) to US$194.6 million (CAD$270.3 million) year over year.
Since eliminating 300 jobs last summer, Corus has shifted the rights to Netflix series Geek Girl to Boat Rocker and said goodbye to co-CEO Troy Reeb last month, leaving John Gossling as the company’s sole chief executive.
