Walmart opened its first “Store of the Future” in Cypress, Texas on April 30—and this revamped supercenter establishes a new blueprint for how the world’s largest retailer is planning to modernize its shopping experience.

Designed to serve as more of a community hub, this location now features a pharmacy with clinic space and a drive-thru, a gas station and auto care center, and even a shop-in-shop featuring a favorite local Hispanic bakery.

Walmart’s Cypress supercenter also integrates a lot more technology, with QR codes on products that consumers can scan for more information and alternative suggestions. The retailer’s goal is to make shopping “faster, easier and more connected” for its customers.

This is Walmart’s first new supercenter in four years, and it’s part of a multi-million-dollar investment strategy to create new jobs and improve how people shop. Using this blueprint, the retailer is looking to build or convert more than 150 stores over the next “several” years as part of a long-term plan to modernize retail, expand access to essential services (like the pharmacy) and transform its locations into community spaces.

For 2025, Walmart has set its sights on opening new supercenters in states including Texas, Utah and California, as well as converting others in New Jersey and California.

The mass retailer is embarking on this ambitious growth plan on solid financial footing. In the annual financial report it released last week, Walmart revealed that it generated US$681 billion in total revenue during its 2025 fiscal year that ended on January 31, which is up by 5.1% from the previous year.

The company also outlined several priorities that echo what its “Store of the Future” concept is aiming to deliver, including a strong commitment to supporting families. “Our strategy is to make every day easier for busy families, operate with discipline, sharpen our culture, become more digital, and make trust a competitive advantage,” according to the report. “Making life easier for busy families includes our commitment to price leadership, which has been and will remain a cornerstone of our business, as well as increasing convenience to save our customers time.”
