Instead of a typical season renewal, Netflix is giving one of its top teen shows a more cinematic ending.
The streamer has greenlit a movie that will wrap up See-Saw Films’ three-season live-action series Heartstopper (pictured). Production is slated to begin this summer, and the film’s premise will explore how teen couple Nick and Charlie tackle the hurdles of a long-distance relationship and newfound independence as Nick heads to university.
This story stems from the upcoming sixth and final Heartstopper graphic novel by author Alice Oseman—whose work has served as the primary source material for the acclaimed series since it debuted on Netflix exactly three years ago today. Throughout its run, Heartstopper has earned multiple Children’s Emmy Awards and has been widely recognized for its standout LGBTQ+ representation in the kids TV space.
Oseman is attached as the film’s screenwriter, and Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice) will direct, with lead actors Kit Connor and Joe Locke joining Patrick Walters, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Euros Lyn as executive producers.
News of the movie follows months of uncertainty about whether or not Netflix was going to move forward with a fourth season of the popular show. Heartstopper season three came out in October and had racked up 10.9 million views by the end of 2024. By comparison, season two generated 16.5 million views in a slightly longer time frame from August to December 2023.
In other Netflix news, Que Minh Luu is leaving the company after a five-year run as director of content in Australia and New Zealand. During her tenure, she helped oversee coming-of-age originals such as Heartbreak High and Boy Swallows Universe on the streamer’s local slate.
