Tokyo-based producer/distributor Toho has earmarked roughly US$830 million to spend over the next three years on new content and strategic initiatives.
In its latest mid-term plan published yesterday, the company says that 2026 to 2028 will be a phase of ongoing investment and transformation to drive global success.
The plan outlines an investment of around US$490 million (JPY¥70 billion) into creating IPs and producing animation, digital games, films and theatrical plays—while a separate US$100 million-plus will be allocated to scaling up the Godzilla franchise.
Plans are already underway to increase Toho Animation’s output over the long term with expanded development, production and marketing structures. The goal, outlined in the plan, is to achieve “an operating profit of 200% or more in the IP and anime business by doubling the number of employees at Toho Animation by 2032.”
Notably, Toho already made a big play to beef up the distribution side of its business last year by acquiring GKIDS, the leading distributor of anime content in the North American market.
To take further advantage of the ongoing spike in global demand for anime, Toho wants to build more touchpoints beyond series and films—and it’s focusing on digital games and activations like IP-themed cafes inspired by popular characters from its anime titles. The company has also set aside US$34 million (JPY¥5 billion) for a service called TOHO-One that’s set to roll out sometime in spring 2026. This fan-focused digital platform will offer films, anime series, games and e-commerce dedicated to Toho’s IPs.
