This year’s CinemaCon expo wrapped up a busy week in Las Vegas yesterday that certainly wasn’t short on hype-building for major studios’ film slates. Here’s a recap of everything that’s likely to matter to the kids industry.
Sony kicked things off on Monday, confirming a June 4, 2027 release date for its Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse threequel. The studio also officially announced the title of the upcoming fourth live-action film with Tom Holland in the webslinger’s suit—Spider-Man: Brand New Day is due out on July 31, 2026.
Then on Tuesday, the Lionsgate presentation teased The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which will hit theaters on November 20, 2026. This is an adaptation of the latest book in Suzanne Collins’ dystopian teen franchise, published in March by Scholastic. Sunrise sold a whopping 1.5 million copies worldwide in its first week, signaling what could be a strong box-office run for the film project.
Warner Bros. previewed its upcoming animated films including The Cat in the Hat and Meet the Flintstones, as well as delivering one of the buzziest moments of the convention with a sneak-peek of DC superhero pic Superman. And in a move that should generate more pre-summer family audience interest, the studio’s Superman clip is currently running in theaters as a preview before its latest kids release, A Minecraft Movie.
On Wednesday, faith-based distributor Angel Studios made an appearance to outline a “kids go free” promotional campaign for its CG-animated The King of Kings film, opening on April 11. The offer of two free kids tickets for every adult ticket purchased will be available for a limited time.
Universal Pictures took the stage to preview its live-action adaptation of DreamWorks Animation’s How To Train Your Dragon, which is due out on June 13. And in a strong sign of confidence in this remake, Universal also revealed that a live-action sequel is already in development to premiere on June 11, 2027. Another big title coming out this year from the studio is Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie (September 26)—with DreamWorks Animation president Margie Cohn revealing that high-profile celebs Kristen Wiig and Gloria Estefan have joined the voice cast.
Last but not least, two media giants stepped up on Thursday to spotlight several of their upcoming kids & family releases. Disney shared teasers and clips from its live-action Lilo & Stitch reboot, Pixar’s Elio and Zootopia 2—which has welcomed Abbott Elementary‘s Quinta Brunson as a voice actor.
And during a Paramount presentation earlier in the day, animation president Ramsey Naito announced the official title The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender (January 30, 2026), as well as sharing trailers for two big 2025 animation releases, Smurfs (July 18) and The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants (December 19). Giving a nod to upcoming sequels PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2, Naito called family films “an integral part of our strategy here at Paramount.”
