The world of Magic: The Gathering is expanding, with new live-action content on the way from Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment.
Launched by Wizards of the Coast in 1993, this classic trading card game will be adapted first as a feature film, followed by a TV series and several other live-action projects.
This marks the latest effort by Hasbro to build more touchpoints for the franchise on the heels of an animated series that’s already in the works for Netflix. Magic: The Gathering topped US$1 billion in annual revenue in 2022 and has more than 50 million players globally, according to the toyco.
With its “epic world-building and creative storytelling,” Magic aligns well with Legendary’s “diversified approach to marquee IPs,” notes Zev Foreman, Hasbro’s head of film. Legendary has worked on feature adaptations for brands like Pokémon (Detective Pikachu) and Superman (Man of Steel), and is now gearing up for the release of its Minecraft movie in April.
Hasbro has been busy lately putting a number of other well-known toy brands onto screens, including a Monopoly feature produced in partnership with Lionsgate and Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap banner, and film/TV adaptations of the board game Clue with Sony.
