Disney heats up plans for Ice Age 6

This greenlit sequel will mark the first big-screen installment for the 20th Century franchise since 2016's release of Collision Course.

Disney and 20th Century Animation are reheating the Ice Age franchise, with a sixth film officially in production and slated to premiere in 2026. This news came out on Friday during Disney’s weekend-long D23 Brazil fan event in São Paulo.

The new pic’s voice cast will bring Ray Romano (Manny), Queen Latifah (Ellie), John Leguizamo (Sid), Denis Leary (Diego) and Simon Pegg (Buck) back together again, but there are no plot details available yet.

When it hits theaters, this will be the first theatrical Ice Age sequel in a decade, following 2016’s Collision Course—which grossed approximately US$408 million against a US$105-million budget. But the franchise’s most recent entertainment installment was The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild, a spinoff pic that landed on Disney+ in 2022, with only Pegg reprising his role.

Featuring a comedy-driven premise revolving around a group of prehistoric animals, the Ice Age IP originally hailed from 20th Century subsidiary Blue Sky Studios—which was absorbed by Disney as part of its US$71-billion acquisition of Fox in 2019.

Since Ice Age kicked things off in 2002, the franchise has collectively generated US$3.2 billion in worldwide ticket sales with its five features, as well as spawning comedic short films including Oscar contenders Gone Nutty (2002) and No Time for Nuts (2006).

The announcement of Ice Age 6 continues Disney’s sequel-heavy kids film strategy, which has already proven lucrative between Pixar’s Inside Out 2 (this year’s top-grossing film) and Moana 2, which is projected to do more than US$100 million and set a new box-office record with its US Thanksgiving Day opening later this month.
