A 10-minute Spanish animated short took home top prize in the Tricks for Kids competition at the 2021 Stuttgart Festival of Animated Films.

Sponsored by Studio 100 Media and judged by a group of six kids ages 11 to 13, the award honored Roberto (pictured), a short from director and producer Carmen Córdoba González about a budding romance between neighbors who struggle to communicate and overcome body image issues.

Reven og Nissen (The Tomten and the Fox), a nine-minute film that follows along as a hungry fox hunts for food on a cold winter night, was given a special mention in the competition. This Norwegian/Swedish/Danish short is directed by Yaprak Morali and Are Austness, and produced by Ove Heiborg, Thomas Gustafsson and Johan Palmberg.

And a second special mention went to Les Chaussures de Louis (Louis’ Shoes), a five-minute film produced by MOPA—L’Ècole du Film d’Animation et de l’Image de Synthèse. Directed by Théo Jamin, Kayu Leung, Marion Philippe and Jean-Géraud Blanc, this project centers around an eight-year-old boy who is autistic and about to introduce himself at a new school.

In addition to Tricks for Kids, Stuttgart also handed out its International Trickfilm Festival awards last night.

The Grand Prix Animated Film prize went to Precious, directed by Paul Mas and produced by Je Suis Bien Content. And adding another trophy to its growing collection, Cartoon Saloon’s Wolfwalkers picked up the festival’s AniMovie Award for best animated feature film. Thanks to the pandemic, the 2021 Stuttgart Festival of Animated Films is taking place online from May 3 to 16. The event showcases short films and feature films, as well as Animation Production Days—a business-focused market that ran from May 4 to 7 this year.
