Dragon saga Wings of Fire is ready to heat things up at Netflix. The streamer has ordered a 10 x 40-minute animated adaptation of the bestselling book series from Wrinkle in Time director Ava DuVernay and her ARRAY Filmworks prodco.
Wings of Fire takes place in a world inhabited by dragon tribes, and follows five young dragons as they fight to end a brutal war that has raged on for generations.
DuVernay partnered with Warner Bros. Animation on the project last year, after the studio secured exclusive rights to the middle-grade book series. Written by Tui T. Sutherland and published by Scholastic, the Wings of Fire franchise spans 15 novels, three graphic novels and four short stories.
Dan Milano, Christa Starr and Justin Ridge are adapting the books for television. DuVernay, Milano, Starr, Ridge and Sutherland will executive produce, alongside WBA’s Sam Register and ARRAY Filmworks’ Sarah Bremner.
Fantasy fare continues to captivate kid viewers, and Netflix has taken notice. The streamer has partnered with Boat Rocker Studios and Industrial Brothers on a CG-animated series called Daniel Spellbound, and it also recently optioned the bestselling Redwall book series for TV and film development.
