The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Gap stores have stopped playing ball with each other.
The league and the clothing chain have ended a three-market test retail partnership in which Gap designed and marketed an exclusive line of kids NBA apparel, including sweatshirts, caps, T-shirts and overalls. The merchandise featured the colors and logos of the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers and was sold in surrounding metropolitan areas.
The pilot program ran the course of the 1996-1997 basketball season.
The NBA says that it was pleased with the results of the partnership, but both parties came to a mutual decision to discontinue the current relationship. The league has not ruled out future marketing programs with the retail chain domestically or overseas.
The NBA has no current plans to enter into any similar agreement with another retailer.
