A US$13.6 million dedicated children’s digital channel broadcasting to the U.K. is in the works at the BBC, according to press reports. The channel would follow on the heels of six new digital channels recently announced by the BBC, including BBC Learning, BBC News24 and BBC Choice. As of press time, the BBC was not confirming the launch, with a spokesperson saying only that ‘we are looking at a children’s channel, but I couldn’t confirm that we’re launching one because we’re not at that point.’ The new ad-free channel will broadcast in digital widescreen only, and will run 12 hours a day of children’s programming from the BBC’s catalog, according to reports.
