Mattel’s new movie division Mattel Films is partnering with Warner Bros. Pictures Group again to produce the first-ever live-action feature film based on the Hot Wheels franchise.
No other details about the film are available yet, but Mattel has noted that since the brand debuted in 1968, more than six billion toy cars have been sold, at a rate of more than 500 million a year. In fact, the Hot Wheels single assortment was 2018’s top-selling toy SKU, according to The NPD Group.
This Hot Wheels movie joint-venture marks the second project for Mattel Films and Warner Bros. Pictures Group, which are already working together on a Barbie feature film starring and co-produced by Margot Robbie. And it’s also the second project to come out of Mattel’s newly minted film division, led by producer Robbie Brenner (Dallas Buyer’s Club, Mirror Mirror).
