The Second World Summit on Television for Children, held in London in March 1998, was the launchpad for S4C’s 26 x 12.5-minute co-production Animated Tales of the World, currently in production. Each animated short tells a children’s tale from a different country. Christopher Grace, director of animation at S4C, explains the unique financial structure of the 26-country co-production: ‘Every country puts in what [it] can afford, with each country’s [broadcaster] paying a co-production license towards all 26 films, from which we [S4C] then draw the money down. We’re acting as a broker, a bank,’ he says, and ultimately as executive producer, under the aegis of the World Summit. Beating a path through the logistical jungle, script and series editors Penelope Middelboe and Martin Lamb of Right Angle edit the scripts and oversee production of the films in all countries. The budget of each film is approximately US$300,000.
