The Children’s Television Workshop is looking at consolidating locally produced content in its Sesame Street spin-offs around the world, with an eye on building a library of 10-minute episodes that could be marketed internationally.

Sesame Park, a co-pro with Canada’s CBC featuring locally produced stories mixed with CTW-produced fare, will be the test case. CBC creative head of children’s, youth and daytime programming Adrian Mills says the public broadcaster is consolidating the 10-minute local stories (which formerly aired in pieces throughout the half-hour eps) and airing them separately as Sesame Park Snippets. CBC is also continuing to air the full Sesame Park episodes, which include the Snippets material.

CTW, in turn, will dub and market Snippets internationally. Ancillary rights were still being hammered out at press time, but Mills says CBC is angling for a cut of any global revenues.

Cathy Chilco, CTW’s VP of production/executive producer, international television group, stresses that whether CTW proceeds to consolidate and market local content from other Sesame Street spin-offs depends on the success it has with Snippets.

In other CTW news, Open Sesame will air on Nickelodeon in Australia this April. The nonprofit also inked a four-year licensing deal with Italy’s satellite kids channel RaiSat Ragazzi to air 104 episodes of the series. The half-hour preschool show is billed as the best of Sesame Street and currently airs in more than 30 countries including Malaysia, Thailand, Greece, Finland, the Czech Republic, Armenia and Pakistan.
