Following the growing trend among toymakers to use more eco-friendly materials, Hasbro has announced that it will use plant-based, bio-polyethylene terephthalatae (PET) for blister packs and plastic windows in its product packaging beginning in 2019.

Using bioPET plastic—which is made from 30% plant-based material derived from agricultural byproducts—is a part of Hasbro’s move toward more sustainable packaging, which began in 2010 when the company eliminated wire ties. In 2015, it reached 90% recycled or sustainably sourced paper for packaging and in-box content.

Last week, The LEGO Group announced that it would be making a botanical elements range—including leaves, bushes and trees—out of plastic sourced from sugarcane. The initiative is part of LEGO’s commitment to use all sustainable materials in core products and packaging by 2030.
