Sky Kids mines Kickstarter for new original toon

Kickstarter project Labuntina Sing-along from animator/songwriter Valentina Ventimiglia will be turned into a Sky Kids original preschool series.

American crowdfunding platform Kickstarter has long been a successful online testing ground for children’s tech toys and interactive apps, but a new animation-focused campaign trend is picking up steam and gaining the attention of broadcasters around the world.

The latest to take notice is UK pay-TV giant Sky, which has commissioned a new Kickstarter-funded, 12 x two-minute animated preschool series for Sky Kids entitled Labuntina.

Announced by Sky Kids’ head of kids content Lucy Murphy on the final day of the Children’s Media Conference in Sheffield, the commission is also being backed by Creative England and will launch in April 2018 across Sky Kids’ on-demand platforms including Sky Q, Sky+, the Sky Kids app and the Now TV Kids Pass.

The series is based on Kickstarter campaign Labuntina Sing-along from animator and songwriter Valentina Ventimiglia.

As a way to entertain her two-year-old daughter, Ventimiglia decided to develop a song-based series featuring three characters—Judi Bee, Kodi Fox and Lili Fish. Sky Kids’ version of the series will include original songs sung by children in each episode.

Labuntina comes on the heels of Amazon announcing the July 21 premiere date for Niko and the Sword of Light, a 13 x 22-minute fantasy series based on a Kickstarter-funded motion comic by Toronto indie concept art studio Imaginism.

The order also follows Sky Kids’ original commission of Aliens Love Underpants And…, another 12 x two-minute toon based on the popular books by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort.
