WEBTOON Entertainment is expanding its mobile comics platform by launching short-form video episodes for 14 of its most popular titles.

These five-minute shorts began rolling out on the company’s English-language app today, featuring dynamic transitions, immersive music and voice acting to attract new audiences. WEBTOON’s global head and chief strategy officer Yongsoo Kim says this is a bigger play to reach younger consumers, who have a strong appetite for short-form videos on TikTok and YouTube.

To appeal to this growing target demo, WEBTOON has strategically selected a wide range of original comedy, fantasy and romance titles on the platform to participate in this episodic video experiment, which will initially deliver 280 shorts (20 for each franchise). Some of these titles include The Mafia Nanny (230.9 million views), Morgana and Oz (85.6 million views, pictured), Star Catcher (39.9 million views) and Vampire Family (15.4 million views).

This is WEBTOON’s latest move to harness other forms of entertainment to boost its popularity. The company recently reorganized in order to better transform some of its most successful comics into TV series and movies. It also formed a partnership with Disney to adapt more than 100 existing comics from the Marvel and Star Wars vaults into webtoons, and another with Penguin Random House imprint Ink Pop to publish some of the platform’s original titles in physical print editions over the next five years.

The company’s immensely popular comics app averages 155 million active readers each month.
