Even though season two of its live-action manga adaptation One Piece is still a year away from launch, Netflix is doubling down with a third-season greenlight.

The streamer made the announcement at this weekend’s annual One Piece Day celebration in Tokyo (August 9 to 10).

Season three will begin filming sometime later this year in Cape Town, South Africa. Ian Stokes (Teen Wolf, Luke Cage), who is already involved as a writer and co-EP on the show, will additionally serve as co-showrunner alongside Joe Tracz (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, A Series of Unfortunate Events).

One Piece revolves around a young pirate named Luffy and his “Straw Hats” crew on their quest to discover a legendary treasure. It’s popular with tweens and teens and is based on the long-running manga of the same name by Eiichiro Oda, which previously inspired the classic anime series by Toei Animation that launched in 1999.

Netflix’s early renewal is a significant sign of confidence in the live-actioner, which debuted in 2023 and became the service’s most-watched single season in the second half of the year, with 72 million views. Since then, the streamer has made more plans to mine the IP by ordering an upcoming remake of the original anime titled The One Piece from WIT Studio and adding the property to its Nextworld experience on Roblox last year.

The franchise is also expanding in other ways. The Tokyo event revealed that the One Piece: Heroines novels are getting an anime adaptation—with a first visual revealed on the official X account. Penned by Jun Esaka and illustrated by Sayaka Suwa, these books feature short stories about the female characters in One Piece.
