Sony Pictures Animation is spinning a bigger web for its marquee franchise.

The studio is in early development on a spinoff film focused on Spider-Punk, also known as Hobie Brown.

The punk rock-inspired iteration of Spider-Man first stole the show in the 2023 sequel Across the Spider-Verse (pictured), which, thanks to universe-hopping shenanigans, featured multiple variants of the friendly neighborhood webslinger.

Daniel Kaluuya, who voiced Spider-Punk in the film, is returning to develop and co-write this spinoff with actor and producer Ajon Singh. Back to produce this franchise extension are filmmaker duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie) and Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: No Way Home).

There’s no word yet on the exact plot, but the film should no doubt dive deeper into the character’s core punk-rock traits, from his anti-authority outlook to some pretty impressive guitar skills.

Kaluuya is also expected to reprise his role as Spider-Punk in the upcoming trilogy capper Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is slated for a June 25, 2027 release. This threequel was delayed significantly due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes, and Sony recently pushed the release back again by three weeks. According to Variety, this was a strategic move to get the film out when 100% of US schools are on summer break (vs. the previous date of June 4, when only two-thirds are on break).

With a wide appeal to kids and four-quadrant audiences, the first two installments of the Spider-Verse saga have collectively generated more than a billion dollars at the box office. Academy Award winner Into the Spider-Verse (2018) grossed US$394 million, while the 2023 sequel made around US$690 million.
