Disney+ is developing a limited series based on a beloved retelling of Cinderella—hailing from Skydance Television, Concord Originals and singer-actor Jennifer Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions.
This is a new take on the musical version of the fairytale that was crafted in the ’50s by legendary composer-lyricist duo Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. And it will be told from the fairy godparents’ perspective, with a script penned by Rachel Shukert (The Baby-Sitters Club), who is also attached as an executive producer and showrunner.
Other EPs include Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina from Nuyorican; Concord EVP/RKO co-president Sophia Dilley; former Concord CEO Scott Pascucci; and Bill Bost from Skydance.
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella originated as a 1957 TV musical, followed by two more small-screen remakes in 1965 and 1997. This version was then adapted for the stage several times, including a London West End pantomime play.
Lopez has been more active in the kids content space lately, with a Bob the Builder movie also in development at her production banner.
Disney+ had success with a previous Cinderella reimagining called Sneakerella (2022), a musical comedy about a young boy with a love for sneakers who has to deal with his overbearing stepfather and mean stepbrothers. The film earned four Children’s and Family Emmy Awards that year.
