Nine sets up streaming and broadcasting leadership

The newly combined division has started solidifying its senior team as part of the Australian mediaco's ongoing restructuring plan.

Australia’s Nine Entertainment is bolstering the leadership ranks of its recently combined streaming and broadcast division, which was created in January as part of a restructuring effort.

The move brought Nine’s broadcast operations (Channel 9) and its streamers (Stan and 9Now) under the purview of Amanda Laing, who’s been heading up this amalgamated division as MD of streaming and broadcast since April.

Laing, who previously worked at Foxtel Group (CCO and Binge MD) and Nickelodeon (non-executive director), has now pulled back the curtain on her senior team—all of whom will report to her once they officially start on July 1.

Among them is Channel 9 director of TV Michael Healy, who has been promoted to executive director of entertainment and will be responsible for content across TV and streaming. Moving up from her gig as Stan’s chief content officer, Cailah Scobie will serve as executive director of entertainment and content acquisitions.

Dan Taylor (executive director of Stan), Hamish Turner (executive director of Channel 9, 9 multi-channels and 9Now) and Tom Malone (MD of radio) will oversee strategic goals in the new operational structure. Nine also noted that it will soon start actively recruiting for other senior roles such as chief strategy officer and chief marketing officer.

“While Nine’s streaming and broadcast brands have enjoyed independent success, our strength lies in the power of the Nine Group, and today’s changes are the first step in unlocking that potential,” Laing said in a release.

Nine’s presence in the kids media landscape has been somewhat muted in recent years. But the broadcaster operates youth-oriented channel 9GO!, which offers content for preschoolers to older teens and launched kids originals Earth Science Investigators and The Actually Really Very Difficult Show in 2023.

The 9Now streamer also has a family-friendly catalogue, including titles like the Aussie edition of LEGO Masters (commissioned by Channel 9) and acquisitions such as Barney’s World and Barbie: It Takes Two. Most recently, Stan joined the BBC’s upcoming Lord of the Flies adaptation last fall, with the project moving forward as a four-part Stan Original Series.
