Walmart is bolstering its suite of AI-powered tools with a new shopping assistant called Sparky that went live on Monday.

Consumers can interact with this assistant through the “Ask Sparky” button on Walmart’s e-commerce site and app, which provides strong search functions, answers questions about products on the platform, and even compares different items to determine the best one.

Sparky aims to eliminate the guesswork from the shopping experience, allowing customers to add more items to their cart with confidence that they’re making informed decisions, according to the company.

The assistant also has several use cases, such as helping to pick out the perfect toy for a child’s birthday party, finding the right jersey for a sports event or recommending a new outfit for a day at the beach. And planned updates will let shoppers reorder household essentials, create family meal plans and buy books.

Earlier this month, Walmart released its latest Retail Rewired Report, which found that 47% of respondents would trust an AI shopping assistant to choose and purchase products for them within a set budget. While it’s still early days for adoption of the tech, 69% of those surveyed noted that speed is a key priority in their shopping experience, and 54% said that using digital shopping assistants have helped them save time.

The top three concerns consumers have about adopting AI tools are threats to their privacy or security (37%), irrelevant product suggestions that waste time (33%), and repeated pitches to buy brands or items they have no interest in (29%). Walmart views these as critical trust-building areas for attention and improvement over the next five years.
