Roblox to roll out character licensing tools in Q3

The platform's new License Manager program will help creators request to use popular IPs in their games and experiences, as well as giving brand owners a way to dispute unauthorized usage.

Roblox has announced that it will launch a new set of tools later this year designed to help creators partner legally with brand owners on gaming experiences they’re building for the platform.

Set to roll out in Q3, Roblox’s License Manager program promises to make it easy for developers to apply directly to brand owners for licenses to use their IPs in new and existing gaming experiences. Each agreement will include a unique set of terms and content standards for creators to follow, in addition to royalty rates for the brand owner if the game or in-game item makes any money.

As part of the application process, developers must showcase their creative abilities by presenting a partially or fully completed version of the intended experience to the IP owner for approval. Owners can establish strict brand requirements that developers need to meet before they publish their games, but they cannot force them to use company templates or approved assets.

Conversely, these tools will also help brand owners identify and request the removal of experiences that are using their IPs without permission. Roblox, which will update its terms of use on June 6 to include information about the upcoming program, advises creators who have any unlicensed materials in their games to remove them until they receive approvals.

Roblox is planning to announce a first group of IP partners for License Manager at a later date,  and it also plans to offer these tools to creators who have developed their own original IPs through the platform.
