It’s no surprise that a slew of movie deals and announcements are emerging this week to coincide with Cannes Film Market, which is running until May 21. Here’s a roundup of everything you may have missed on the kids & family feature front:

  • 4Cats Pictures has partnered with fellow Spanish prodco Mogambo (1917) to set up a new Madrid-based joint-venture called 12K Films. This fledgling production banner already has a number of projects in the pipeline, including a sequel and threequel to 4Cats’ CG-animated kids film Mummies, which had a breakout US$54-million run at the box office in 2023. Looking to open up financing opportunities, 12K Films is keen to work with international partners and tap into Spain’s generous tax credits.

  • Odin’s Eye Animation has picked up worldwide sales rights to Fairyheart, a 2D-animated feature based on the 1978 Hungarian children’s novel Tündér Lala by Magda Szabó. This fantasy pic about a fairy child is produced by Mythberg Films (Hungary), Traumhaus (Germany) and Canadian studios Lakeside Animation and Storyteller Pictures, based on a script co-written by director Anita Doron (The Breadwinner).

  • Attend—the distribution division of the Fithian Group—is on board to orchestrate the US release of a buzzy CG-animated movie that’s slated to premiere at Annecy next month. Fleak is about the friendship between a lonely 11-year-old boy and a creature who has arrived from another dimension. Finland’s Anima Vitae (Niko – Beyond the Northern Lights) is the lead producer on this movie, with Poland’s Animoon and France’s Godo Films serving as co-producers.

  • Shout! Studios has picked up US and Canadian distribution rights to Epsilon Film’s live-action family flick Robin and the Hoods. A retelling of the classic tale of Robin Hood, this premise follows a group of fantasy-loving kids who must deal with a rival gang bent on taking over their playground. The Sky original project is actively making the rounds on the festival circuit, and was recently screened at the Boston Kids Film Fest and the Providence Children’s Film Fest.
