WBD and Legendary embrace A Minecraft Movie memes with new screenings

Viewers are being encouraged to "get loose" when A Minecraft Movie: Block Party Edition rolls out in North American cinemas on May 2.

Warner Bros. Discovery and Legendary Pictures are inviting guests back to theaters to watch their co-produced live-action feature film A Minecraft Movie again, but with a new meme-fueled twist.

These new A Minecraft Movie: Block Party Edition screenings will roll out at participating North American theaters on May 2, encouraging viewers to sing during the film’s musical numbers and meme along during its most hyped-up moments. It’s a strategy that builds on the video game adaptation going viral on social media, with moviegoers dressing up, throwing bags of popcorn and getting wild during the film’s infamous “Chicken Jockey” scene.

The new screenings also come at a critical time when cinema chains are desperate to get audiences back in seats post-pandemic. According to UK-based media consultancy Omdia, global box office is projected to generate US$34 billion in revenue this year, reaching 80% of the record US$42 billion from 2019.

In April, A Minecraft Movie quickly emerged as the highest-grossing film of the year, earning more than US$162.7 million at the North American box office during its opening weekend. To date, the film has earned more than US$815.9 million at the global box office in its domestic (46.6%) and international markets (53.4%).
