Toys “R” Us Studios is partnering with LA-based Story Kitchen to produce the first live-action feature film inspired by its retail brand.

Plot details are thin at the moment, but TRU Studios president Kim Miller Olko describes the movie concept as an adventure that will take audiences through the company’s 70-year history in the toy business. Its script draws inspiration from family films such as Back to the Future and Night at the Museum, while also taking notes from 2023 blockbuster Barbie (Mattel and Warner Bros. Discovery).

Olko and a Story Kitchen team featuring Dmitri Johnson, Mike Goldberg, Timothy Stevenson and Elena Sandoval are on board as producers, and preliminary conversations with filmmakers are underway to work on casting and additional story details.

Story Kitchen is best known for adapting video games into feature films, starting with the first live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film in 2020. The studio is also currently producing movies based on collecting/farming title Slime Rancher (Monomi Park) and the teen adventure game franchise Life is Strange (Square Enix).
