Walmart is betting big on Mexico this year, investing more than US$6 billion to expand its operations across the country.

The global mass retailer’s 2025 investment in the region is triple last year’s US$2-billion spend, and it will go directly towards opening new stores and two additional distribution centers in Tlaxcala and Bajio. Walmart Mexico and Central America CEO Ignacio Caride says the store openings alone will create 5,500 new local jobs.

Walmart’s expansion plan plays into Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s mission to make Mexico the 10th largest economy in the world over the next six years and create 1.5 million new domestic jobs. Sheinbaum also highlighted that 83% of products sold in Mexican Walmarts are made in Mexico, and 85% of these suppliers are small and medium-sized businesses.

Walmart opened its first Mexican storefront in 1991 and has since expanded its operations in the country to encompass more than 3,200 stores and 21 distribution centers across 31 states. In 2024, the retail giant’s Mexico and Central America division generated more than US$48.9 billion in annual revenue, representing a year-over-year increase of 8.1%.
