The Star Wars universe is making room for some fresh animated content in its ever-growing pipeline. Lucasfilm teased two new projects in the works during a Star Wars Celebration fan event in Tokyo that attracted more than 100,000 attendees from April 18 to 20.
First up, Disney+ has ordered Maul: Shadow Lord, a new animated series that will focus on one of the sci-fi franchise’s notable villains, Darth Maul. Slated to launch in 2026, this toon will pick up from the final season of The Clone Wars (2008 to 2020) to look at how Maul rises up again to lead more underworld factions.
Lucasfilm also announced The Ninth Jedi—a new spinoff series based on a same-name episode from the Disney+ anthology Star Wars: Visions, which features a variety of animated shorts exploring the lore of the franchise. Tagging along with the daughter of a lightsaber-smith on a dangerous mission, “The Ninth Jedi” was featured in Visions‘ anime-centric first season that came out in 2021.
Season two was released in 2023, with Cartoon Saloon and Aardman among the studios attached. And Lucasfilm revealed during a panel at Star Wars Celebrating that a third season of the anthology will hit Disney+ on October 29. A third season of CG-animated series Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures will also release this fall on the streamer and Disney Jr.
The Disney-owned studio also confirmed that its next film, Star Wars: Starfighter, has been slated for a May 2027 release. This live-action pic stars Ryan Gosling (Barbie) and is set five years after the events of trilogy capper The Rise of Skywalker (2019), which made US$1 billion at the global box office.
