Diving into another kidlit adaptation, Apple TV+ has announced a new kids project called Lulu Is a Rhinoceros. This 2D-animated special from LA’s Propagate Content (Prank Encounters) and Bento Box (Gumby Kids) is confirmed for a May 30 global launch—which should cover more than 100 countries and regions.
Lulu is based on a same-name picture book penned by father-daughter duo Jason Flom and Allison Flom that was published by Wicked Cow Studios in 2018. They are both executive producers on the special, with Allison doing double-duty as a head writer.
Like the book, the special’s premise revolves around a spunky bulldog who sees a rhino when she looks in the mirror, and wants the world to recognize her true identity. Angela Stempel (Swan Song) is directing the project, which takes a music-driven approach with original tunes by singer-songwriter Leland. And headlining the voice cast is Auli’l Cravalho, best known for voicing Moana in Disney’s lucrative Polynesian princess franchise.
Apple TV+ has had previous success with book-to-screen adaptations including Frog and Toad, WondLa and Eva the Owlet.
