Flying Bark Productions has signed on to the upcoming Ghostbusters animated series for Netflix as an animation service partner.
Spearheaded by Sony Pictures Animation and Ghost Corps (the studio’s decade-old production banner that oversees the Ghostbusters brand), this project has been in development for the streamer since 2022, and it was quietly greenlit last fall, according to Variety. Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) are attached as EPs, along with Elliott Kalan (HouseBroken).
Flying Bark officially started hiring for Ghostbusters today, sharing artist job postings across all of its social channels. This new project comes on the heels of animation service contracts for Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Nickelodeon) and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur (Disney).
The Aussie studio expanded about a year ago by opening a new hub in Madrid—where it’s benefitting from Spain’s tax rebate of up to 30% for foreign animation productions (with a qualifying spend of US$200,000), as well as a wider net for attracting talent.
Although storyline details are still under wraps, Netflix’s take on the Ghostbusters canon has a couple of previous animated iterations to draw from, namely popular ’80s toon The Real Ghostbusters and a 1997 follow-up called Extreme Ghostbusters.
Buoyed by the viewership success of shows like Wednesday, darker content for kids & teens seems to still be trending at the streamer, which is also working with Flying Bark on a Stranger Things animated series that was first announced in 2023. And it recently commissioned a Scooby-Doo live-action series from Berlanti Productions.
