The UK government has greenlit Universal Destinations & Experiences’ proposal to start constructing its first-ever European theme park in Bedfordshire, England next year.
Occupying a former brickworks factory site, this new park will span 476 acres after the five-year build is complete, creating an additional 28,000 construction and tourism jobs before its gates even open to the public in 2031.
Universal’s proposed plans include room for the core theme park (which will be divided up into several themed lands), as well as a 500-room hotel and a dedicated retail and dining complex. The company hasn’t confirmed any initial attractions or brands that will be featured, but initial concept images tease a performance stage, multiple rollercoasters and a water-themed venue.
When the park is complete, Universal estimates it could attract as many as 8.5 million visitors in its first year alone. The company will also have the option to purchase an additional 224 acres of land to expand the park and improve transportation over time.
