Jumbo is the latest feature contributing to a hot streak for Asian animation in the movie sector this year. Although this CG-animated kids movie from Jakarta-based Visinema only premiered in local theaters on March 31, it has already become the highest-grossing Indonesian animated film of all time—selling upwards of 1.3 million tickets in its first week alone.

This record previously belonged to a 2D-animated film called Si Juki the Movie: Panitia Hari Akhir, which racked up around 642,312 admissions in 2017, as per Variety

It’s been a long road to success for Jumbo, which was in the works for five years based on an original script penned by Ryan Adriandhy and Widya Arifianti. Directed by Adriandhy, the movie tags along with a young boy who stands up to doubters and enters a local talent show to put on a play that adapts a fairytale from a book given to him by his late parents.

Jumbo‘s early numbers are a promising sign of demand for family-friendly big-screen experiences in Indonesia, which ranks as the fourth most-populated country in the world with roughly 282 million people. Notably, it also follows the record-breaking run of China’s Ne Zha 2, an animated fantasy feature that has earned more than US$2 billion at the global box office this year.

Well-positioned to recreate its strong domestic showing internationally, Jumbo is gearing up to expand beyond Indonesia, with June releases scheduled in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam. Distribution deals are also in place for a number of other Asian and European territories, although specific details were not available at press time.
