Following the theatrical domination of CG-animated sequels last summer, it seems like live action might have its day in the sun this year.
According to the results of our poll yesterday, Kidscreen readers are banking on WB Pictures’ A Minecraft Movie and Disney’s Lilo & Stitch live-action reboot (pictured bottom and top, respectively) to dominate ticket sales. The comedy-driven Minecraft adaptation—which hits theaters today and is on pace for a strong global debut in the US$130-million range—has the edge with 23.5% of your votes, while Disney’s live-action retelling of Lilo & Stitch came in a very close second at 22.4%.
There’s also optimism for original storytelling, with 20% predicting that Pixar’s Elio will be this summer’s biggest performer. This sci-fi feature tags along with a young space fanatic who is mistakenly identified as Earth’s leader by an alien faction.
And another live-action remake, Universal’s How To Train Your Dragon, cornered nearly 13% of the votes to finish ahead of two CG-animated features—Paramount’s Smurfs (11.8%) and DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys 2 (9.4%).
