Netflix orders Scooby-Doo live-action series

Midnight Radio's Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg will write this new origin story.

Netflix is revving up the Mystery Machine with a series order for a Scooby-Doo live-actioner from Berlanti Productions—nearly a year after it was first revealed to be in development.

With a go-ahead for eight episodes, this as-yet-untitled series will explore how Scooby and his mystery-solving friends—Fred, Daphne, Velma and Shaggy—got together to tackle their first case at summer camp.

This “modern reimagining” will explore how a soon-to-be-famous Great Dane puppy may have become a witness to a supernatural murder, according to an official logline. In this version of the characters, Shaggy and Daphne will have a history as “old friends,” while Fred will be introduced as the new kid.

The script is penned by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg from LA-based Midnight Radio (Jumanji: The Next Level), who are also attached as showrunners and EPs. Executive producers also include Midnight Radio partners André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner, along with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman on behalf of Berlanti Productions (Riverdale).

Originally created by Hanna-Barbera, Scooby-Doo debuted as a 2D-animated series in 1969 and has since expanded into a sprawling universe of multiple toons, live-action films, animated features and specials. But this new Netflix iteration marks the first-ever live-action series for the popular franchise.

As a legacy horror/mystery franchise with kid appeal, Scooby-Doo should be a great fit for Netflix, where the genre has been a strong driver of viewership. Supernatural teen favorites Wednesday and Stranger Things are the streamer’s most-watched English-language shows of all time, with Wednesday‘s first season racking up 252 million views and season four of Stranger Things reaching 140 million watches to date.

It’s also familiar territory for TV veteran Berlanti, who has executive produced supernatural- and mystery-themed programming for Netflix with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018 to 2020) and last year’s Dead Boy Detectives.
