A new live-action Power Rangers series appears to be in development for Disney+, with some notable talent negotiations underway. As reported by The Wrap, Jonathan Steinberg and Dan Shotz—the showrunners behind the streamer’s just-renewed Percy Jackson and the Olympians—are exploring a deal to write, produce and serve as showrunners on this new project as well.
Power Rangers owner Hasbro Entertainment will produce, along with 20th Century TV. Since acquiring the brand in 2018, Hasbro originally signed director Jonathan Entwistle (I Am Not Okay With This) to develop a new Power Rangers entertainment universe spanning a feature film and a series that was originally set up with showrunner Jenny Klein (The Witcher). This project was even in development for Netflix at one point before being abandoned last year, according to multiple reports.
If this new Disney+ series moves forward, it could help modernize the 32-year-old franchise to reel in younger audiences—following a live-action feature film reboot attempt in 2017 that underperformed, making just US$142.5 million globally against a budget in the range of US$100 million to US$105 million.
Revolving around a group of heroic teens who are chosen to protect Earth from aliens with special gadgets and powers, the Power Rangers IP was born in 1993 when the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series launched on Fox Kids. It was followed by several popular iterations over the years that refreshed the brand’s themes, settings and characters.
On the toy side of things, Hasbro inked a deal with Playmates in April 2024 to launch a new line of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers toys this year.
