Veteran filmmaker Jon Favreau (Iron Man) is spearheading the development of a new series in the works for Disney+ that will adapt an IP that’s nearly 100 years old.
According to Deadline, Favreau is the driving force behind a new live-action/animated concept based on Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a classic character created by Ub Iwerks and Walt Disney for Universal in 1927. Oswald went on to star in 27 Disney-produced theatrical animated shorts—starting with Trolley Troubles—before starring in over 70 more from other producers. When Universal took control of the Oswald brand in 1928, Walt Disney Studio was prompted to create a similar character as a replacement—and thus, Mickey Mouse was born.
Oswald entered the public domain in 2023. But before that, under Bob Iger’s previous tenure as CEO, Disney was able to acquire the rights to the IP in a trade with NBCUniversal in 2006. “As the forerunner to Mickey Mouse and an important part of Walt Disney’s creative legacy, the fun and mischievous Oswald is back where he belongs, at the home of his creator and among the stable of beloved characters created by Walt himself,” Iger said at the time.
Favreau is writing and producing his revamp for Walt Disney Studios, but no plot details are available yet.
