Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are rewarding the top dog in their IP library with his own entertainment vehicle, announcing a series of four short films focusing on Superman’s canine sidekick Krypto.
Created with an eye to getting kids and families interested in the DC Universe, the first of these seasonal one-offs will roll out in September/October, following the premiere of writer/director James Gunn’s live-action film Superman (pictured) on July 11.
Gunn described these family-friendly shorts about the Man of Steel’s super-powered alien dog as “fun and goofy” at a February 21 DC Studios press event, where he and studio co-chairman Peter Safran talked about their goal to make three movies a year (two live-action and one animated), plus four series for Max (two live-action and one animated). DC’s current slate includes the film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, HBO series Lanterns and an upcoming animated movie called Dynamic Duo.
These new Krypto short films and three recently announced animated series in the works at Warner Bros. Animation—DC Super Powers, Starfire and My Adventures with Green Lantern—are part of a broader WBD strategy to reach younger demos with its well-known adult-skewing IPs, according to a company spokesperson. WBA is also doing this with preschool series Batwheels, which has been renewed for a third season.
